Family Of Korryn Gaines Wins $38M Appeal In Wrongful Death Lawsuit

After a years-long battle in court, the family of Korryn Gaines has finally been awarded a settlement in the shooting death of the 23-year-old mother.

On Wednesday, a judge ruled in favor of Korryn Gaines’ family and awarded them $38 million.

Jurors concluded that the last verdict in the case was inconsistent and found the 2016 shooting was not reasonable, thus violating the civil rights of the family.

Gaines’ was shot and killed on the morning of Aug. 1, 2016. Officers with the Baltimore County Police Department arrived at the Randallstown apartment of Korryn Gaines to serve warrants on her and her fiance, Kareem Courtney. After a standoff that lasted about six hours, police shot Gaines and her 5-year-old son, Kodi Gaines. Kodi would survive the shooting. County prosecutors would rule the shooting justified, and no charges would be filed against officers.

In 2018, the Gaines family won a wrongful death lawsuit of more than $37 million. But the county filed an appeal in 2019 and won.

Though, in a sudden reversal, the jury reinstated the family’s original verdict on Wednesday.

“Found that the officer’s actions violated the law and his actions were excessive and unnecessary,” said family attorney Kenneth Ravenell.

Judges found the lower courts were inconsistent in its verdict and “abused its discretion” by throwing out the jury’s initial decision to award the family.

Calling the actions that took the life of Gaines a violation of the family’s civil rights.

“The verdict is, quite frankly, one that should not be shocking to anyone. It’s just the right thing to do,” Ravenell said.

Out of the $38 million awarded, Gaines’ son will receive $32 million of it.
